The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds provide compensation for oil pollution damage resulting from spills of persistent oil from tankers. Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the international liability and compensation regime shares the cost of oil spills at sea between the shipowner through their insurers, and oil receivers through the IOPC Funds.
An intergovernmental organisation comprising 122 Member States, the IOPC Funds has been in operation for over 45 years, has been involved in 159 incidents and has paid £778 million in compensation.
