InterSpill Delayed to 2022 as a Unified Response to COVID-19

As a consequence of the escalating Covid-19 pandemic, and as part of a coordinated response by the three triennial oil spill events, it has been agreed that IOSC, originally scheduled for May 2020, should be postponed to 2021, that the next Interspill event should move to 2022 and that Spillcon should be delayed to 2023.

The new Interspill 2022 dates, and confirmation of the venue for the event will be announced in the coming months (www.interspill.org).

IOSC 2021 will still take place in the original host city of New Orleans, Lousiana, USA but on10-13 May 2021(www.iosc.com). Spillcon will take place in 2023, with further details to be confirmed (www.spillcon.com). The successful three-year cycle of events is preserved by these shifts.

Richard Proctor, Chairman of Interspill, said that “the decision was unanimous and reflected the importance of reacting to the global health crisis in tandem with the other events in this triennial series. Clearly, for Interspill, delaying to 2022 is a disappointment, but understandable”.

The decision to postpone IOSC and shift the triennial series by one year was made with the best interests of all involved, with the well-being of participants being top priority. The ongoing spread of COVID-19 has resulted in continued concern over health and safety, along with travel restrictions, event size limitations and closures.
